  4.     The noxious cloud hanging over Imhausen-Chemie keeps growing
  5. thicker. Under fire for its alleged complicity in the building of
  6. a poison-gas factory in Libya, the West German chemical company is
  7. besieged by criticism from its own employees, who fear their jobs
  8. will be lost unless President Jurgen Hippenstiel-Imhausen resigns.
  9. Two weeks ago Imhausen's second-in-command took a drug overdose in
  10. an apparent suicide attempt. Now comes news that the firm is
  11. involved in the illegal production and sale of MDMA, a designer
  12. drug commonly known as "ecstasy."

  14.     German prosecutors say Imhausen has supplied U.S. drug
  15. traffickers with 374 lbs. of MDMA, worth up to $27 million on the
  16. street. Two Americans and one Imhausen employee have been arrested.
  17. While Imhausen has admitted manufacturing the drug, company
  18. officials claim they were unaware the substance was illegal.
  19. Ironically, Imhausen could face stiffer penalties if convicted of
  20. breaking local narcotics laws than for helping a foreign country
  21. make deadly chemical weapons.
